Media Release: Toledo Kids to Learn Capoeira

On February 6, 2012 the art of Capoeira will reach over 80 kids living in the Lingap Center in Toledo City, Cebu. The center houses kids who have suffered from child abuse, abandonment, neglect and exploitation. The class will be led by Instructor Jensen Chow of Sinhá Bahia de Capoeira Internacional- Cebu.

The Lingap Center houses over 80 children and provides a haven for street children and orphans to rebuild their lives. A good number stay until they reach adulthood while some only stay a short period until they are placed in a safe environment. The original center was founded by the Toledo City Government and Dept. of Social Welfare and Development in 1988.

“Capoeira is a beautiful art in itself but it is a means to an end. The ultimate aim is to make people more comfortable with themselves and make them love themselves a bit more,” Instructor Chow said. The Capoeira community in Cebu is led by Instructor Jensen Go Chow, a balikbayan who has been training, teaching and performing Capoeira for more than a decade. He is a member of Sinha Bahia de Capoeira, an international grupo/association of Capoeira with branches in Brazil, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines.

Sinha Bahia De Capoeira Internacional, the only Capoeira academy in Cebu City, has a guest Capoeira master, Mestre Torpedo, visiting Cebu City to take part in the Batizado Interno, a very important festival for the Capoeira academy. The main event is 7pm Saturday evening at Ayala Center's Active Zone where Mestre Torpedo, Instructor Jensen & the Cebuano Capoeira practitioners will present a thrilling display of acrobatics, music, martial art, rhythm and Brazilian Culture. What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, sports, music, and dance. It was created in Brazil mainly by descendants of African slaves with Brazilian native
influences, probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly kicks and quick leg sweeps, with some ground and aerial acrobatics, knee, elbows, punches and head butts.

The word Capoeira comes from the Tupi-guarani language, referring to the low vegetation areas in the intern part of Brazil.

Growth of Capoeira

At this point, Capoeira spread like wildfire even beyond the northeast of Brazil, and did not stop until it had enveloped most of the country. It was not long until the beauty of this great art couldn't be contained by Brazil's borders and began to spread to other countries around the world. Capoeira is gaining popularity right now, and it's popping up all over the place. It has also been featured in lots of other media such as commercials, music videos, movies, etc.

Capoeira was featured extensively in the 1993 movie, "Only The Strong". This movie starred Mark Dacascos, an actor/martial artist, and was about a former green beret who lived in Brazil for 4 years and trained in Capoeira. When he came back to his old high school he found it in a miserable state, so he decided to start a program to teach students Capoeira to give them a sense of pride and responsibility.

Capoeira is also featured in the Namco fighting game, Tekken 3 (also Tekken Tag Tournament and Tekken 4) in the form of Eddy Gordo. Not the first video game Capoeirista, but definitely the best and most famous, Eddy Gordo introduced Capoeira to many Americans. Some of Eddy's moves are not Capoeira (gymnastics flare and breakdancing windmill) but everything else is pure Capoeira that was motion captured by Mestre Marcelo Pereria of Capoeira Mandiga in California.

What is Batizado Interno?

A Batizado (literally baptism in Portuguese, and borrowed from the religious tradition) is normally an annual event for a Capoeira group in a region or country. The practice of Capoeira Batizados originates from Capoeira Regional, but has been extended to other styles.

Batizados are large events and are very important for the group organizing it. It is the point in the year where the new members will be baptized officially into the group and receive their first cords and where the other members depending on their progress will get a new one. A typical batizado will take several days and consist of workshops, the actual Batizado itself and a Troca das Cordas. Often many groups from more than one region will attend a Batizado for other groups. This allows for development of the game by contact with other players, teachers and styles.

Dancing Martial Art for Youth in Trouble with the Law

At 11am 9 July, SINHÁ BAHIA DE CAPOEIRA (www.Capoeira.ph) is launching a weekly Capoeira class for youth who have had brushes with the law and are now living at Community Scouts. Community Scouts is a brand new Center built by the Rotary Club of Cebu and the Cebu City government. The center serves as a refuge for minor offenders who, instead of being put in a regular jail where they are mixed with hardened criminals, are detained in a cell within the Center. Once released, they are invited to join the commune where they undergo a rehabilitation process, join the scouting activities, are provided education and taught basic vocational skills- and now the beautiful Brazilian cultural art of Capoeira! Capoeira is a holistic art that blends martial art, culture, music, song and acrobatics into a unique game. 

Community Scouts also has facilities for boys to stay in the center until they have finished their schooling or vocational education. Many of its former wards have found employment in factories and government service. A few are working overseas. One of them is now a full-fledged policeman, having passed its admission test after finishing college education. He is now assigned as Disciplinarian for the Center.

There are 56 boys presently housed at the center and every single one of them signed up to learn Capoeira at a new weekly class that will be taught pro bono by Instructor Jensen Go Chow and his team of coaches, including Michael Legaspi, who performed Capoeira on Pilipinas Got Talent last year. Sinha Bahia de Capoeira is the only Capoeira academy in Cebu. Sinha Bahia is a member of a worldwide Capoeira association which has branches in Brazil, Spain, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand and here in our country in Manila and Cebu. Here in Cebu, the Capoeira community is led by Instructor Jensen Go Chow, a balikbayan who spent a year in Brazil learning the art of Capoeira and now is teaching here under the supervision of Brazilian master, Mestre Torpedo, who relocated to Manila from Rio de Janeiro 2 years ago. The program of classes was organized by the Events Co-ordinator of Sinha Bahia de Capoeira,  Corra Mae 'Em-em" Aliste, and the project is funded by donations from the Capoeira students and coaches for meals for the boys and free classes. 

Capoeira, which is rapidly spreading around world, has a very rich, interesting history. The art evolved in colonial Brazil, where African slaves forbidden from practicing martial arts, used music and song to disguise their preparations to fight their captors. The elements of the disguise have become integral parts of the practice. Modern Capoeira intertwines music and song with self defense, acrobatics and dance. It offers the world a tool and methodology to embrace the highest aspirations of the human spirit: liberation, joy, freedom, and wisdom!!

World Class Capoeira Instructor Visits Cebu City

Cebu City, February 15, 2011 – World class Capoeira instructor Guerreiro visits Cebu City! Sinha Bahia De Capoeira Internacional, the only Capoeira academy in Cebu City, has a guest instructor in the person of Coach Guerreiro. He will be visiting Cebu City to take part in the Batizado Interno, a very important festival for the Capoeira academy. Sinha Bahia De Capoeira Internacional will be having its Batizado Interno on February 24-26 2011. The Batizado will be consisting of workshops, rodas, Batizado & Troca de Cordas. Guerreiro, together with Instructor Jensen, will also be providing training programs to Capoeira enthusiasts and beginners. It would be a combination of the best skills and mastery as Coach Guerreiro and Instructor Jensen embark on providing world class training to the students of this wonderful art.

What is Capoeira?

Who is Guerreiro?

Mouhamad Elabdallah known in the Capoeira world as Coach Guerreiro has 14 years of Capoeira experience. On top of many years of Capoeira experience, he also extensively trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Freestyle Wrestling, Thai Boxing, Western Boxing and Shooto. He learnt kick boxing from Alex Tui, Australia's first world kick boxing champion, at the world famousMundine's Gym (Tony Mundine Boxing Gym, named after the Aboriginal Boxing great Tony Mundine snr and base of former two-time WBA Super Middleweight champion boxer and current IBO Middleweight champion, Anthony Mundine jnr). At Mundine's Gym, Guerreiro also taught Thai Boxing with Khun Kru Gus (from Bangkok, Thailand) and under Alex Tui, Guerreiro was stable mate of Peter Graham, a former world kickboxing champion who currently competes in MMA. Guerreiro has worked almost 6 years in the Security Industry in Sydney, where he has tested Capoeira techniques in the real world as supervisor/head guard at what some consider the roughest and most violent bars

and clubs in the world. He and Instructor Jensen together won a Capoeira tournament in 2002 in Sydney, Australia that had competitors from around the country and at National All Styles tournament in Sydney on August 2003.

Lawyers Shooting Hoops!

Last July 31, 2010 at the Capitol Parish Gym, along Escario Street, Cebu, was the launching of the 5^th Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) 2010 Mayor’s Cup Basketball Tournament.  Young lawyers gathered to meet and participate in the basketball tournament.  Newly elected Mayor Michael "Mike" Lopez Rama was also present for the event’s opening.

The dynamic lawyers were entertained by a raffle draw and a dance performed by blah blah blah. Sinha Bahia de Capoeira, an international group originated from Brazil, also did an astonishing performance of their art with lively music and dance, and stunning acrobatics. Atty. Raphael Yap, a Capoeira practitioner of the group, did a fantastic job as he introduced the martial art to his fellow lawyers by showing off his skills.

As the lawyers enjoyed their ‘sisig’ during lunch, the Pañeros won 74-45, bringing the Eagles down. The Young Lawyer’s Association of Cebu (YLAC) swept the Bros N’ Law, 83-68, while Pecandela also won over Mt. Zion, 67-61. The tournament was concluded as the two-time champion Super Idols was blown by the Ligitators with a score of 61-74.
